Kathi stopped by this morning on her way to work to see my book challenge quilt, and she approved (of both the idea and fabric choices.)   So far it's been a hit with everyone who's seen it!

Just as Kathi left, Patti arrived, and we were off to the movies.  We both thought The Fault in Our Stars was excellent: funny and sad, and powerful.

Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.

Here's what I found about the book:

Winner of the 2013 Children's Choice Teen Book of the Year Award

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

According to Wikipedia: Green stated that the first inspiration for The Fault in Our Stars came from when he worked as a student chaplain at a children's hospital. He found the children to be as human as healthy people, and wanted to argue for their humanity, their complete humanity. He was initially intimidated by the idea and knew that it was not his story to tell, but said he has received positive comments from sick children.  The novel was also influenced by Esther Earl, a girl whom Green was friends with who died when she was 16 years old of thyroid cancer. Green credits Earl for inspiring him to finally write the book, as she demonstrated how a short life could also be a full one.

Just got a call from Deb and Jerry, who have not yet left Tucson (it's 2:00) so I've still got plenty of time to get more stuff done around the house... if I get off the computer and get started on it!
