Margaret Baker, the owner of Quilter's Bee (75th & Cactus), gave a wonderful presentation on Hawaiian quilts at this morning's meeting .  (She lived/taught in Hawaii for 20 years.)   Her vest (yes, she made it herself) is not truly traditional because she used a patterned fabric instead of just one color.

Here's one of the traditional quilts she made, which took her 5 years, working on it 30 minutes every day.

We got to try out the technique, using paper instead of fabric.
This is the hibiscus pattern.

The traditional Hawaiian quilts have a center applique flower pattern,
with a lei pattern around the outside.

Of course art quilters have begun to take liberties with the rules.  This quilter eschewed a solid color fabric and instead opted for a multi-colored batik.

And this quilt is comprised of two different colored flowers and has no lei border.

Margaret had passed around a small sample quilt which she accidentally left behind when she packed up, so after the meeting I popped over to the store to return it to her.  And 'as long as I was in the neighborhood', I did a little shopping.

Okay, okay, so I did more than a little.  But I got some wonderful fabrics!

Moving on now... Here are a few pix from this morning's Show & Tell.

Here are Linda's BOM

and Sharon's.

Mom - do those stork scissors look familiar?  Margaret shared a story about a pair that her son-in-law bought for her daughter, who loved them.  One day the scissors were MIA; when her daughter finally tracked them down, her husband was using them... to cut his toenails!

Check out this project of Louise's.  Need a little something to take with you when you travel so you have some place to set those small things that could get lost?  (Mom used to use the ash trays in hotel rooms... except that now with non-smoking rooms that option is gone!)

Basically it's just a flat 'quilt' with snaps in the corners -

and once you snap it, VOILA!  Instant 'thingy' holder.

P.S,

I stopped by the library this afternoon to drop off 3 books, and bumped into Diane Fox, there with her grandson Braydon, and sister Laurie.  Diane asked if I was going to sub next school year (of course), which was a great relief to her.  After a meeting at the District Office today she already has 3 dates when she'll be out for workshops, and wants to sign me up.  It's so nice to be wanted and appreciated!

While at the library I checked out the NEW shelf - and picked up Diana Gabaldon's newest release, the next book in the Outlander series.  I must say I am pleasantly surprised that I did not have to wait in a long Hold line to get it; I'm excited to start reading it!

June 10: The breathlessly anticipated eighth installment
of Diana Gabaldon’s sweeping Outlander series finally hits shelves today.

Once it cools off this evening (and that IS a relative term these days!) I need to make a grocery store run.  Deb and Jerry arrive tomorrow, and while things are not quite this bad, supplies have gotten pretty low.
