I was enjoying a soak this afternoon and watching the birds go after scraps of carded wool that I had put out (in a suet feeder) as nest materials.  Apparently that 'feeder' has seen quite a bit of action, as there were bits and pieces littered about on the ground.  At some point someone had freed a rather large piece, and I watched as a small, pretty bird with a striking yellow breast tried to pull a manageable tuft free.  It was so colorful I assumed it was a male, assisting with nest-building duties.  But once back in the house I checked my Birds of Arizona Field Guide.

Now I'm inclined to guess it was a female lesser goldfinch.

(Maybe I should try keeping my book in the hot tub instead of by my bed?)
