My afternoon didn't quite go as smoothly as the morning did. Spent time on the phone with the insurance company, who have (not surprisingly, given the estimated cost of repairs) deemed the Saturn a total loss.
While I can't complain about the quite fair/reasonable amount they're going to pay us as compensation, it was a solid/dependable car with low mileage, and won't be easily replaced. Then there was a trip to the body shop to collect all of Alex's stuff (and there was a lot!) before releasing the vehicle. Still have the rental loaner until Thursday.
The afternoon mail did bring a smile - my signed copy of The Tangled Loon, by friend Virginia Cassarino-Brown, arrived. It's based on a true rescue, four years ago, by her husband Allan.
My mom (Harriet) and Virginia's mom (Jean) were childhood friends growing up in the Bronx, and remained closest of friends until Jean's death. Our families spent Thanksgiving together every year, and had a great tradition of summer picnics in the park.
