I spent this afternoon mowing the Back 40 while Tom and Alex trimmed some downed branches from the olive and the mulberry trees. It was pretty toasty out there (the high today was 110) and while the pool is nice to rinse off in it's so warm it just isn't very refreshing. For dinner Tom cooked up some of the rock cod he caught in California, and we ate early because Alex had to be at work at 5:00. That early dinner turned out to be a very good thing, because our power went off a little before 5:30.
I called Joy & Dick (our neighbors across the street) to see if they had power, but there was no answer. Next I called Steve & Lisa (on the next street, north of us) and they had power. Called Tom & Billie (only 2 houses east of us!) and they had power. Called Jeanne (several houses west of us) and they had power. This was not a good sign. But just as I was beginning to think it was OUR problem, Joy called me back (she'd been out feeding the horses, and heard an explosion - when she went back to the house she had no power.) This made it APS's problem.
We tried keeping cool in the pool, but that just didn't do it. We headed out, ostensibly for ice cream, but at Lisa's request ended up at Carrabba's for Chocolate Dream cake. When we left there around 8:30 it was still 109. As we pulled up to the house there were 3 serious APS trucks out front, getting ready to replace the transformer at the end of our driveway. Bottom line - power came back on a little after 10:00. YAY!
Now we can see again (hard to read by candlelight!), and house is already cooling off. Thank you, APS. It was only 5 hours, but in this heat it sure seemed a lot longer.
